Boundless Terp Pen XL Review: Good taste

Boundless is known for a focus on big hits over flavor, and the Terp Pen XL is no exception. It’s hits taste good, but aren’t in the same class as something like the Puffco Plus. Hits off metal coil atomizers, like those in the Terp Pen XL, are never as flavorful as ceramic cups, leaning more to the stronger side instead. The Terp Pen XL’s stainless steel coils heat up in a matter of seconds, and hit harder than many concentrate pens on the market.

Boundless Terp Pen XL CoilCater your sessions with three power options, whether you’re in the mood for flavorful or potent clouds. The Blue setting sits around 698°F/370°C and for stronger flavor, while the Red setting hits around 779°F/415°C for the biggest hits. I spent most of my time in the middle on Green, or 734F/390°C.

A battery with enough juice

Its battery is nothing to boast about, but that’s expected with pocket-friendly concentrate vapes. The Terp Pen XL charges up in about 45 minutes via micro-USB, and serves up around 40 puffs per charge. Whether I was holding down the fort at home, or running around town, the Terp Pen XL carried enough juice to serve up hits anywhere.

More ways to load

Instead of one standard way to load, the Terp Pen XL can be used for different styles. I could place a ball of concentrate onto the coil for a more precise dose, or plunge the coil right into my stash and have at it. I found the Terp Pen XL works equally well with cold or hot loading. For a cold load, all I did was apply the concentrate to the coils and inhale. For a hot load, which is more like a traditional session, I inhaled first, then applied the concentrate during my hit. Cold hits tend to be a little more flavorful, while hot loads are thicker with a little more punch.

The Terp Pen XL let’s you consume with the traditional load-n-go approach, but also works like a honey straw. If you’re unfamiliar with them, you heat one end of the honey straw, and inhale from the other end as you apply the hot end directly to your concentrate. The Terp Pen works exactly like this, but without a torch!

Multiple features

Boundless sets its users up with a number of modern features for a fun experience. Its touch sensor feature adds a cool, sophisticated vibe, even if it’s a bit clumsy. The touch sensor will respond to any tap, not just your finger, so you’re bound to bump the temperature around on accident. The LED indicator displays the current temp setting, as well as the battery level, but it’s pretty close to my face during a hit. Some will find it a little hard to see.

Boundless Terp Pen XL Coil Touch SensorThe most notable features are its breath activated function and variable voltage. Producing vapor as soon as I start inhaling is as easy as it gets, and is the benchmark for convenient concentrate use. The Terp Pen XL also has three temperatures for different moods:

Blue setting: 3.3V, 698F/370°C
Green setting: 3.7V, 734F/390°C
Red setting: 4.0V, 779F/415°C

Quickly triple-tap the pen near the USB port to toggle through each voltage.

Use it on a bubbler!

The Terp Pen XL can also mate with 14mm glass for filtered hits off a bubbler! Very few vapes transition well from the pocket to the bubbler, but the Terp Pen XL crushes it. For a traditional concentrate rig experience, connect the mouthpiece to your bubbler and remove the cap. With a load at the ready, start inhaling, and apply your concentrate to the coils! If you have a bubbler, we highly recommend throwing your Terp Pen XL on it - you’ll thank us later!

Fantastic for travel

The Terp Pen XL is one of the best concentrate vaporizers for on-the-go sessions. The cap has a small quartz compartment to store your concentrate that’s easy to hit directly from. Preloading the coil with concentrate was my preferred method when out and about. Scrape a bit onto the coil, throw the cap on, and it’s ready to go as soon as I inhale. Its breath activated function, zero heat up time, and simple load and go approach makes the Terp Pen XL our go-to for travel.

Warranty

The Boundless Terp Pen XL is covered by a three-year manufacturer warranty. As with all vaporizers purchased from Planet Of The Vapes, you are also covered by our 100% Satisfaction Guarantee.

Cleaning

We’ll release an in-depth cleaning and maintenance guide soon, but here are a few steps you can take to keep your unit in great shape in the meantime.

To clean the coil, unscrew the metal sleeve below the coil, and take a long drag. This will engage the heater and burn off all the old residues, and the waste will waft into the air instead of into your lungs. Eventually the vapor path will need some attention, but it cleans easily in the interim with an alcohol wipe.

A few tips

Remember the touch sensor that can be a bit finicky? You may accidentally bump the temperature around, so check the setting before you hit it. Just give it a quick puff and look at the light. If you run into any issues charging your unit, try disconnecting the coil and give it another full charge. And lastly, if you take hits with the cap on, check the silicone pad in the bottom of the cap. You may find some hidden concentrate waiting for you!

Who’s it for

The Terp Pen XL has a pretty wide appeal. It’s perfect for quick, satisfying hits on-the-go, but can also be thrown onto a bubbler for big rig hits. If you’re looking for a simple, effective concentrate pen that’s good for any situation, the Terp Pen XL is an easy pick.

Who’s it not for

The Terp Pen XL may disappoint those who prize flavor above all else. It was designed for big hits, so It’s not as tasty as bucket coil pens.

Our take

I’m a big fan of the Terp Pen XL. It has everything I need for a complete day out - big, breath-activated hits with a built-in storage compartment. I also like the versatility. There aren’t many vapes that satisfy on a bubbler, but can still be thrown in a pocket for travel. Recently, I went on a three-day excursion and took three concentrate pens with me. To my surprise, after only a couple hours I ditched the more expensive, tastier pens for the Terp Pen XL for the rest of the trip. I’m going to watch this one closely to see if others like it as much as I do.
