**The Crafty vaporizer has some features only accessible via a smartphone app. On November 15th, 2019, Apple removed all vaporizer apps from its store. Apps that were downloaded before removal will still work. Android users are not affected. Please read our blog post to learn more about the app removal, and how it affects specific vaporizers.**
Storz & Bickel has a reputation for easy to use vaporizers, and the Crafty is no exception. Its simple control scheme and elegant design make it a great choice for vaporizer enthusiasts who want to pack a session into their pocket, and don’t want to sacrifice when it comes to vapor quality. Our quickstart guide will walk you through your first session with the Crafty, and hopefully answer any questions you might have.

Already charged, top it off
Storz & Bickel ships the Crafty with the battery already charged to 80 percent, but we recommend plugging it in and charging it up the rest of the way before use. It normally takes two hours to fully charge from empty, so it shouldn’t take long to top it off the first time around.
Connect the app for a burnoff
**On November 15th, 2019, Apple removed all vaporizing apps from its store, including this Storz & Bickel app. It might not be permanent, but we are planning on an extended absence. The Crafty works fine on its own, but can’t be customized with the app on an iPhone, unless it was downloaded before November 15th. Android users still have access to the app.**
Like a lot of vaporizers, we recommend running a burn-off cycle before use to make sure there’s no residue left over from manufacturing or shipping. First, we need to connect the app to manually set the temperature. Download the Crafty Remote Control app for your Android (here) or Apple smartphone (iTunes). Turn on your Crafty and punch in its serial number, which is on the bottom of the vaporizer. Now that it’s connected, turn the temperature all the way up to 410° F by pressing the up arrow, and set the shut off timer to 300 seconds. Turn on the heater and let it run until it shuts off on its own. When it’s done, set the temperature back to the default 365° F, and set the auto-shutoff timer to your desired length.
The cooling unit
The Crafty uses a removable cooling unit to make sure that every hit is as smooth as the last. Twist it 90 degrees counterclockwise to unscrew it from the vaporizer, exposing the oven underneath.
One button operation
The Crafty’s small size means there’s no room for a display, or full controls. Instead, the Crafty uses a single button to control its basic functions. Hold the button for a few seconds to turn it on and start it heating up, as indicated by the flashing red LED. When it’s ready to vape, the light will turn green. Press the button twice in a row to turn on boost mode, which will increase the temperature from the base 365° F to 383° F, or the temperatures you set in the app, until you turn it off. It will shut off on its own after one minute, but you can press the button once to extend that for another minute.
A fine grind
We recommend using the orange plastic grinder Storz & Bickel includes with each Crafty. It produces a medium-fine grind that’s perfect for the Crafty, and ensures a full, even extraction. If you’d rather use your own grinder, turn the grinding layers upside down, so that the herbs stay grinding for a little longer than they would normally.
Cover the oven
When loading your oven, you want to pack it down just lightly, but ensure that the whole width of the oven is covered, so that the air has to pass through the herbs, and can’t go around. If you can’t fill the oven completely, put the concentrate pad (not included) on top of a small amount of herbs, to take up the rest of the space. The filling aid makes the whole process a lot easier, and included diagrams can help show you exactly how full to fill each oven. You can also use the plug inside the filling tool to make sure the herbs are packed down into the oven.
No settings, just go
For your first session, go ahead and fire up the Crafty on its default heat setting, which should be a good temperature for most people. When it stops producing a satisfying amount of vapor, double click the button to put into boost mode and finish off the bowl.
Draw however you like
The Crafty’s excellent cooling unit has very little resistance, which means you can basically pull as fast or as slow as you like. The default temperature setting is good for easy hits without too much conduction, which is very forgiving, so the Crafty is easy to pass around and share.
No need to stir
With excellent efficiency, and some late-session conduction, the Crafty shouldn’t need any stirring to ensure an even cook on your herbs. If you do find you have uneven spots inside your oven after you’re done, try packing it a little looser, or use the included stirring tool tucked into the bottom of the vape.
Clean up
Our full cleaning and maintenance guide will walk you through the process of deep cleaning your Crafty vaporizer, but you can take a couple of steps to save some time down the road. Make sure to dump out the oven after each session, and use the included brush to clean off the screen and inside of the oven. You can also use the included dosing capsule to keep the inside of the oven clean, and soak the capsule in isopropyl alcohol when it gets dirty.
